In Brno, all households that currently operate using the central heating supply will be connected to the system. This is approximately 250,000 inhabitants. In addition, other buildings, institutions, schools, and some industrial areas will be connected to the hot water pipeline.

Energy efficiency and sustainability

Using nuclear power plant heat that would otherwise go unused increases the overall energy efficiency of the system.

The project will allow the thermal energy produced at the Dukovany nuclear power plant to be used efficiently and with minimal energy losses. Connecting the hot water pipeline to Brno will reduce the need for local heat sources and the amount of emissions in accordance with national targets and European commitments on the transition to sustainable energy sources.

Stability
and independence

The Dukovany nuclear power plant provides a stable and reliable source of heat, independent of fluctuations in fossil fuel prices.

By connecting Brno and other municipalities along the hot water pipeline route to the Dukovany nuclear power plant heat source, we will substantially reduce the consumption of natural gas for heating. By eliminating the dependence on natural gas from foreign sources, we will strengthen the resilience of the entire region in the event of energy crises and increase price stability, protecting consumers in the process.

Sustainable
solutions

The pipeline will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels and improve air quality in the region. As a heat source, it is completely emission-free.

The construction and subsequent commissioning of the source is a necessary step towards meeting the decarbonisation goals of the Czech economy. Emission-free heat production will contribute to the Czech Republic’s commitments to the UN Climate Change Convention as well as to environmental recovery.

Direct economic benefits for

Connecting to the Dukovany-Brno hot water pipeline will provide municipalities with significant financial savings.

The hot water pipeline uses nuclear power plant heat, which means lower fuel costs compared to traditional fossil fuels.

The project will allow municipalities to reduce energy costs and redirect funds to other important areas such as infrastructure, education, and social services.

Fossil fuel prices are prone to fluctuations on the global market, leading to unpredictable increases in heating costs. More stable and predictable prices will facilitate municipal budget planning.

pipeline route

The 42-kilometre-long hot water pipeline will run from the Dukovany power plant to Brno through undeveloped land near 14 municipalities in South Moravia and the Vysočina Highlands, including Dukovany itself, Horní Dubňany, Dolní Dubňany, Jamolice, Dobřínsko, Moravský Krumlov, Nová Ves, Oslavany, Ivančice, Neslovice, Tetčice, Omice, Střelice, and Troubsko.

The hot water pipeline will continue towards Brno to the Bosonohy district, where Teplárny Brno will distribute heat through two branches in the city.

The first bypass branch of the hot water pipeline will lead towards Bohunice. It will connect the areas of Kohoutovice, Nový and Starý Lískovec, Bohunice, Bohunice University Hospital, and the university campus, extending to the Old Brno area. This will also make it possible to supply future customers connected to the new hot water connection in the area of Staré Brno-Provoz Špitálka.

Who is behind
the project?

The implementation, financing and complete management of the hot water pipeline is provided by the contracting authority Teplárny Brno, which belongs to the group of companies of the Statutory City of Brno.

ČEZ, the owner of the Dukovany nuclear power plant, is responsible for heat transfer from the Dukovany units to the plant boundary and the related investments.
