Brno, September 10, 2025 – The statutory city of Brno, as the sole shareholder of Teplárny Brno, a.s., expressed its support at the City Council meeting on September 9, 2025, for the preparation and implementation of a strategic project to connect the city to heat from the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant.
This step confirms the crucial importance of the hot water pipeline for the energy future of Brno and the entire region. The project involves transferring thermal energy from the Dukovany plant and distributing it to customers of Teplárny Brno. The goal is to gradually replace dependence on natural gas with an emission-free heat source, strengthen the region’s energy self-sufficiency, and contribute to decarbonization.
“The hot water pipeline project from Dukovany is key for Brno. I believe it will significantly improve the quality of life for all residents of the Brno region. It will contribute to cleaner air while reducing our dependence on gas. I am pleased that the city leadership has today supported its further preparation,” said Brno Mayor Markéta Vaňková.
Preparatory work is currently underway, including property rights arrangements. Route options are being evaluated, and documentation for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) is being prepared. Construction could begin in 2027, with trial operations planned for 2032.
“The hot water pipeline project is fully in line with the updated Territorial Energy Concept of Brno for 2024–2028. It clearly shows that the future of heating in Brno lies in using emission-free sources and significantly reducing fossil fuel combustion. The OZE+EDU variant, of which this project is a part, minimizes gas dependency and ensures sustainable development of the city’s energy infrastructure,” added Deputy Mayor for Energy Robert Kerndl.
The statutory city of Brno’s support is also a clear confirmation that this is a desirable and preferred option for developing the city’s energy infrastructure, playing a key role in the long-term transition to sustainable energy.
The Teplárny Brno’s leadership welcomed the City Council’s approval of the project.
“We greatly appreciate the city’s support. It’s a crucial signal for us, our partners, and funding providers. The project will ensure stable prices and supply for Brno and its residents for generations to come and aligns with European climate goals,” said Teplárny Brno CEO Petr Fajmon.
The Dukovany hot water pipeline project also has significant international relevance. It is one of the first major European investments to link nuclear power with large-scale district heating. This positions Brno as a potential inspiration for other European cities seeking to reduce emissions, strengthen energy security, and provide affordable heat to residents.
“We are convinced that Brno’s project will be seen across Europe as a model example of how to use emission-free sources to decarbonize cities. This is a path that could inspire other capitals, from Warsaw and Budapest to Vienna,” added Petr Fajmon.
