Brno – At its 55th meeting on 20 March 2025, the Economic Committee of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament supported the project to build a hot water pipeline from the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant to Brno.
The Committee recognized the project as a key strategic step towards achieving the Czech Republic's energy and climate goals and fulfilling related Czech and EU commitments.
Led by Teplárny Brno as the main investor, the project aims to utilize cogenerated heat from the power plant to supply Brno’s households and institutions. The pipeline is expected to significantly stabilize heat supply, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and decrease the city's dependence on imported gas. In its resolution, the Economic Committee also endorsed broader use of low-emission thermal energy from nuclear sources in central heat supply systems.
According to available information, the hot water pipeline should meet up to half of Brno's heating demand, which is currently 80 percent reliant on gas. In preparation for the project, Teplárny Brno has initiated negotiations for land acquisition and engaged experts from the energy sector to consult on the technical solution and implementation.
The support of the Economic Committee marks a critical milestone in advancing the project. The Government has already approved a proposed amendment to the Act on Linear Structures, which would designate the hot water pipeline as a priority construction, thus expediting its implementation.
The project represents a significant step towards a modern, sustainable, and energy-resilient future for Brno, bringing not only environmental but also economic benefits to its residents.
