The Dukovany–Brno Hot Water Pipeline is a strategic infrastructure project aimed at bringing heat from the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant to Brno, thereby fundamentally modernizing the city’s district heating system. This is not a standalone investment, but a key pillar of the city’s future energy ecosystem.
The project will enable the use of heat from cogeneration and cover approximately 50% of Brno’s heat consumption. At the same time, it will significantly reduce dependence on natural gas and ensure long-term stable, low-emission, and cost-predictable heat supplies.
Today, Brno is more than 80% dependent on natural gas. This means it is vulnerable to price fluctuations on global markets, geopolitical events, and changes in the emissions trading market.
The district heating system will reduce this dependence to approximately 10% and contribute to a more stable and resilient energy mix. It represents a long-term solution that will strengthen the city’s energy self-sufficiency and provide greater security for current and future generations.
The district heating system offers a combination of stability, savings, and environmental benefits. It will enable annual savings of approximately 77.7 million cubic meters of natural gas and a reduction in CO₂ emissions of roughly 135,000 tons. At the same time, it will cover approximately half of Brno’s heating needs and contribute to the long-term stabilization of heating prices.
The project thus represents one of the largest energy initiatives in the city’s modern history and a significant step toward low-emission energy.
The project is in the design phase. Comprehensive project documentation is being prepared, and the necessary permits are being secured. At the same time, property rights settlements are underway along the entire route.
Project financing is secured through a combination of funds from the Modernization Fund, an investment by ČEZ, and Teplárny Brno’s own resources. The project has the support of the City of Brno, the regions, and the state.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028. Trial operations are expected to take place in 2031, and the first heat deliveries to Brno are anticipated in 2032. The timeline is realistic, taking into account both the scope of the project and the permitting processes.
