On 9 July 2025, the Government of the Czech Republic reviewed the status of preparations for the hot water pipeline project from the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant to Brno. As a result of the meeting, the government endorsed the project and called on the Ministry of the Environment to announce a funding call for this strategic infrastructure, to be financed from the proceeds of emissions allowances.
The hot water pipeline is expected to be completed by the end of 2031 and subsequently put into operation. By harnessing residual heat from electricity generation, it will help lower carbon dioxide emissions, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and ensure stable and predictable heating costs for hundreds of thousands of Brno residents.
This project will serve as a model for other Czech and European cities seeking effective and sustainable heating solutions. It represents a combination of robust technological expertise, interdisciplinary cooperation, and clear climate benefits. A working group comprising representatives from key institutions will continue to provide regular updates on the project’s progress and milestones.
The government’s endorsement, along with preparations for funding through the emissions allowance system, underscores the importance and strategic priority of one of the most significant energy projects of our time.
