Teplárny Brno has completed key talks with the leadership of the municipalities in the vicinity of which the Dukovany to Brno hot water pipeline will run. All mayors have expressed their support for the project and offered their cooperation in its implementation. Most of them are considering the possibility of connecting to the pipeline. Teplárny Brno, who is the investor of the hot water pipeline, will now coordinate with the municipal leaders the planned route of the hot water pipeline and the connection.
A total of 14 municipalities in South Moravia and Vysočina have agreed to the construction of a hot water pipeline from the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant to Brno. It is in their vicinity that the hot water pipeline will run. The aim of all meetings was to inform the mayors about the start of preparatory work on the project. Representatives of the heating plants also discussed with them the property rights settlement of the land concerned, including possible land modifications, or the municipalities' plans in the energy sector, especially in the area of heating.
„All the talks were substantive and I am glad that we talked with the leadership of each municipality about practical matters such as connections and possible adjustments to the land-use plans. All the mayors are partners for us, without whose information we cannot do without. I very much appreciate their helpfulness and support for the project, which is important not only for Brno but especially for the municipalities themselves," says Petr Fajmon, CEO of Teplárny Brno.
Teplárny Brno presented all the basic information about the project to the municipalities. The information provided also included details of the hot water pipeline feeder and details of its overall route, including its plotting in the cadastre of the respective municipality, the technical solution, and the schedule of preparatory works.
„Most of the representatives of the municipalities we spoke to told us that they plan to take heat from the hot water pipeline, which I consider excellent news. It is not just a Brno project, it is also intended to serve the municipalities in its vicinity. We now have to work together and coordinate on specific technical projects. With the municipalities we have to solve especially the routes of the feeder and the connection itself, including the relevant conditions," adds Petr Fajmon, General Director of Teplárny Brno.
Route of the hot water pipeline
The route of the hot pipeline, which is over 42 kilometers long, will lead from the Dukovany power plant to Brno through undeveloped territory near 14 villages in South Moravia and Vysočina, including Dukovany, Horní Dubňany, Dolní Dubňany, Jamolice, Dobřínsko, Moravský Krumlov, Nová Ves, Oslavany, Ivančice, Neslovice, Tetčice, Omice, Střelice and Troubsko. The hot water pipeline will be further routed
to Brno to the Bosonohy district, from where Teplárny Brno will distribute heat through two branches in the city.
The first bypass branch of the hot water pipeline will lead towards Bohunice. It will connect the areas of Kohoutovice, Nový, Starý Lískovec, Bohunice, Bohunice University Hospital, and the university campus, extending to the area of Old Brno. Thanks to this, it will also be possible to supply future customers with the new hot water connection in the area of Staré Brno - Provoz Špitálka.
The second bypass branch will be directed to Bystrc, where it will connect to the housing estate, and will continue to the Králova Pole area. It will thus enable the connection of Komín and Jundrovo and then other localities such as Královo Pole, Žabovřesky, Lesná, Vinohrady and Líšeň. The hot-water route will also include a 1,100-metre-long tunnel under the Bučín hill near Tetčice, which is part of the Bobrava Nature Park.
About the hot pipeline
The construction of the hot pipeline from Dukovany to Brno is one of the largest energy projects in the history of the Czech Republic. The primary objective is to ensure a reliable heat supply and significantly reduce Brno's dependence on gas. In the future, it will provide up to half of the heat consumption in Brno supplied by the Brno Heating Plants, currently, 80 percent of the supplies are dependent on natural gas. The heat supplied is not directly waste heat, but heat from the cogeneration production at the Dukovany power plant. The route of the hot water pipeline will lead outside the built-up areas of the municipalities. Construction is scheduled to start in 2027, construction work will take about four years, and preparatory activities in Brno will start in 2025. The total investment will cost CZK 19 billion. The main investor is Teplárny Brno, which will finance the project from its own and external sources, such as subsidies and bank loans. In addition to Teplárny Brno, ČEZ, the owner of the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant, is also counting on the necessary investment, as it will build a heat exchange station on the plant site.
