The district heating pipeline is designed to stabilize heat prices over the long term. Heat from nuclear power is not subject to emissions allowances or sharp fluctuations in natural gas prices on global markets.
If the hot water pipeline were launched under current conditions, it would result in a price reduction of approximately 10–15%. Its main benefit, however, is long-term price predictability and protection for households against future fluctuations.
Once the district heating pipeline is operational, Brno’s energy mix will consist of approximately 50% heat from Dukovany, one-third from the waste-to-energy plant, 15% from biomass, and roughly 10% from natural gas as a backup source. This combination creates a robust system that is not dependent on a single source and ensures a high level of supply security even in emergency situations.[
The hot water pipeline utilizes heat from cogeneration at the nuclear power plant, not "waste" heat, and its use does not generate new emissions. It will contribute to a reduction in CO₂ emissions of approximately 135,000 tons annually.
The system is completely separate from the nuclear part of the power plant and meets strict safety standards. The pipeline runs mostly outside built-up areas, and the entire project falls under the critical energy infrastructure regime.
Connecting to the district heating system is the simplest and, in the long term, the most reliable way to heat your home. Unlike purchasing your own boiler, heat pump, or solar panels, it does not require a large upfront investment. Households also don’t have to worry about regular inspections, maintenance, or repairs.
The route between Dukovany and Brno runs mainly through undeveloped areas. Within Brno itself, construction will be coordinated so that any disruptions are temporary and communicated in advance. The goal is to minimize the impact on traffic and residents’ daily lives.
